PICKS FOR THE YEAR

By RAYNA SLOBODIAN

Hmm, I think of four albums that stick out in my mind that have come out over the past year. The first would have to be Candiria’s What Doesn’t Kill You ... The band had come back after a tragic van accident that nearly killed all of the members. From that experience, they changed their sound slightly and evolved. The eclectic album gives you a taste of hardcore, hip-hop, jazz and other flavors. What Doesn’t Kill You ... has you listening to something new each time it’s played. Check them out at www.candiriamusic.com

Next off would be Fear Factory’s new release Archetype. Although they have been around the industrial scene for quite some time, this new album reminds me of the old days. If you were ever a fan of Demanufacture then this c.d. will make you happy. Amazing drums and distortion with Burton C. Bell’s typical screams and melodies. Learn more here www.fearfactory.com.

On the local front, the hardcore band Dear Jane I has released an EP entitled Don’t Know Where To Begin. After years of playing, they have finally put out an EP to satisfy their ever growing fanbase. Poetic lyrics are presented through emotionally driven screams by vocalist Jeremy Dove. Reflectively speaking, both drums and guitars are progressive in nature along with simple but integral bass lines by female Bassist Heather DeJong. Pick this one up if you can www.dearjanei.com.

Another local band From Fiction has put out a four track EP. Just off a recent a tour with Billy Talent, they continue to play what some call math rock. I find their live show and music to be diverse and a learning experience each time. Drummer Rob Gordon is not only crazy, but always interesting to watch. Thankfully we have something recorded that never gets tiring ... here it is www.fromfiction.com.
