BLACK ANGEL O San Francisco

There is one proverb that many people know and hold dear: “Don’t judge a book by its cover.”

Everyone should definitely keep this in mind when it comes to the name of a band as well, especially when it the name of the band is Black Angel.

To be honest, when I first heard the name I figured I would be reviewing a Goth-style band, complete with mysterious, dark and moody music. Boy, was I ever wrong.

Imagine my surprise when I began to play the disc and was presented with joyful, upbeat music. I had to take a second look to make sure I had the right disc.

Black Angel first entered the scenes in the late 90’s. Back then, they were known as The Prophets. The Prophets released a five song disc and headlined many clubs in the Los Angeles and Santa Barbara area. J.C. Martin, the founder of the group, is the main singer/songwriter/producer responsible for the music. Other contributing artists include such names as Audrey Turner on backup vocals, and Ronnie Turner on bass. The two joined the group after it was revamped, and helped recreate the sound of Black Angel.

With numerous compilations under their belt, O San Francisco, the latest disc, was released earlier this year. The arrangements of guitar, drums, and keyboards remind me of music from previous decades. I can imagine couples dancing together on a night out on the town. I couldn’t help but tap my feet to the music.

With the presence of both upbeat songs, such as "Cute, Cute and The Wild Life", and slower ballads, such as "Crime and My Love (Truly, Deeply, Madly)", Black Angel has something to offer a wide variety of audiences.

So what are you waiting for? Give them a chance and check them out. You’re definitely in for a real treat.
