NIGHTFLY AT THE HELM

By NAOMI ZWOLINSKI

Tuesday August 24th I found myself at one of Toronto's oldest hot spots enjoying some wings with some friends. It was The Chick 'N' Deli on Mount Pleasant Avenue just south of Eglinton. Nightfly was the night's entertainment and the singer, sax player for the band is a very old and dear family friend, and so it was an extra special treat to see them performing that night.

Peter Graham is the man I am referring to. He is both a singer/front man for the band Nightfly as well as a skillful actor. He's appeared in "The Hurricane" with Denzel Washington and was even on Canada's own SCTV when it originated with the late great John Candy. He's done a number of guest appearances on television programs such as "Investigative Reports" and "Queer As Folk" as well. He's also appeared as vocalist and saxophonist with Motown recording great Martha Reeves. Peter is very animated on stage and when singing tunes from the Stones, you'd swear you were seeing Mick Jagger himself!!

Glyn Stephens is the band's bassist and singer. His tenor voice is deep, sonorous and compliments the band perfectly. Glyn's renditions of The Eagles tunes are the ones you want to go out and catch. His voice is so controlled and soothing, it'll make you want to grab your drink and just relax and enjoy!! He's also done many songs for commercials and traveled with Amy Sky and Regatta performing with their lives shows.

Marc Ganetakos is the band's guitarist and has recently played with Nelly Furtado on the Tonight Show, David Letterman and the Juno Awards. He can be seen in Nelly's "Powerless" video playing the banjo. Marc does session work and has also composed music for film and television.

Finally is the drummer. Gary Taylor is responsible for the groove of the band and is one of the original members of the band Harlequin hailing from Winnipeg. He's also played at the Juno Awards with various artists like Kevin Breit (who works with Norah Jones) and Ian Thomas. On a side note and something I want to mention, Gary is also a very talented and accomplished photographer.

Nightfly does many weddings and corporate gigs for very successful engagements such as Honda, Reebok, Kraft and The Toronto Maple Leafs, to name a few. They play everything from the golden oldies like Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole, to blues artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan and Bonnie Raitt. From classic rock artists like the Stones and The Eagles to R&B like Ray Charles and James Brown. And just to be sure to please the masses, they go all the way to the contemporary top 40 artists like Shaggy, U2 and Lenny Kravitz.

With their varied backgrounds and undeniable talent, these men can surely get a crowd going and keep the dance floor stacked with people of all ages. They're the type of group that showcases each individual's hidden talents so as to give each member a moment to shine. With two incredible singers and front men, a fabulous guitarist and heavy hitting drummer, Nightlfy is a band you do NOT want to miss. They are in the process of creating a website, so stay tuned for that.
