PETER RUNKS Online Review

By NANCY QUAEGEBEUR

Peter Runks’ music is a true representation of what reggae music was intended to be. Each one of his songs sends out a wave of powerful messages and highlight societial issues such as poverty, peace and religion. Hailing from the island of Nassau, Bahamas, Runks has been through a lot including living in the ghetto and surviving the struggles and pressures that come with that. It has been his love for music and God that have helped him through these rough times.

Runks’ music career began in 1998 when he recorded his first album, titled “Divine Vessel”, with Bahamian producer Dillion Mackenzie, which later led to an American tour in 2000.

His biggest break came in July of 2008 when he scored a major hit with his song “Badness Outta Style.” Only two weeks after being released, the song was in rotation on all major radio stations in the Bahamas. It has continued to grow in popularity and become somewhat of an anthem on the streets. This also gained Runks the overdue respect in the reggae music industry he deserves.

Runks’ songs have the traditional reggae, offbeat, rhythmic style that makes it appealing, especially to those who already appreciate reggae music. The lyrics are soulful, meaningful, and inspiring.

Upon first encounter, however, one might be turned off by the seemingly overwhelming religious references. Once passed this (for the non-religious/spiritual), you will be instantly inspired to want to change the world.
