RISE FOR ORDER Digital Review

By DEREK WALSH

Rise for Order have been a mainstay in the Canadian indie music scene for a few years now. Releasing a 5 song, self-produced, self-titled EP in 2006, they have built a solid foundation with a 'do it yourself' code of ethics and a 'fuck you if you don’t like it, or fuck you if you do like it' attitude.

I had a chance to hear a few of the songs from the EP. “Freeze Frame” has a chug chug melody with Trevor Macleod’s distorted guitars and Jorge Pereira’s on again off again Tommy gun drums driving this story of family violence and murder to its end, and daddy’s end too.

“Not Enough” channels a little Rage Against the Machine, while lead singer Johnny Goltz assaults the ears barking threats of “its not enough to watch your back”.

“Out of Control” begins with a banshee scream and continues with a cool vibe, with smooth, flowing guitars that snake in and out of bassist Mad Choyles' thumping first-class delivery to the base of your spine.

Now follow me as we venture into the new stuff. These are demos that I have to assume are pieces of the new album that is to be produce by none other than Steve Thompson, who’s worked with the likes of Gn’R, Metallica, Soundgarden and Korn.

First on the list is “How you Like Me Now”. The best way to describe this song is like putting your ears in a blender, turning it on, and then having someone smash that blender with a bat. Enough said.

Next on the menu we have “Dirty Girl”. The title pretty much says it all, however singer Johnny Goltz seems to really like this “dirty girl”. This song has some really cool hooks and change ups. These guys are very tight musically.

Lastly, we have “Wide Open”, with a hypnotic bass line that pushes this song forward into a head on crash with the guitar and drums. At one point the vocals sound demon-like, cool. I look forward to hearing the final product.

Watch out for these guys. Oh, and if go to see RTO, you might want to leave your girlfriend at home. I think they probably have enough “Dirty Girls” already.

For your sake not hers ...

Well maybe hers too.
