THE WAKING EYES LIVE AT THE MOOSE & GOOSE

You know what I'm noticing? How every time I start one of these reviews, I have the sudden urge to boast about being Canadian. How can you not at a time like this? I always make reference to great Canadian music on the rise, and this band ... well this band is definitely one I'll be keeping an eye on.
Kristy Knight introduced them as her new favourite band of the year, and I can see why. The Waking Eyes not only have a hit single that's been playing in everyone's head since it was released, but their live show is definitely one that's going to be hard to top.
Before hitting the Moose and Goose that Friday night for the performance, I listened to a couple tracks the guys have on their website. Seeing as how I didn't own the CD yet, (it came out the following Tuesday) this was really my only way to get to know something other than their single, "Watch Your Money".
But live is really the only way to appreciate the talent that these guys have. As soon as they started into their set, two bands came to mind. One being the Trews, and the other, Sloan. Both Canadian, both heavyhitters, and both with that 70's rock mixed with 90's punk-rock sound. I'm telling you. It's bands like these that are going to bring back the kind of music that made the bands of that era huge, and the Waking Eyes, on their way to becoming a household name, will be right up there with them.
What I enjoyed the most though, was the guys' personalities themselves. It's another trend that I hope will last a long time. The image of the unreachable, 'I'm-going-to-cry-and-faint-if-I-touch-him', rockstar is gone, as more and more bands are booking gigs in smaller clubs with more intimate crowds and mingling with fans before and after their set. It's a nice thing to see, along with raw humour on stage. ("This is something I learned from The Reason.")
All in all, a very energetic performance from every band member, and a show I'd definitely pay to see again. Let's just hope they love Niagara as much as we love them.
